Fairways and Fall Colors: Playing Golf at Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Washington
State #12: Golfing in Washington – A Crisp Autumn Day at Qualchan Golf Course

There’s something magical about autumn golf—especially when you’re teeing it up in the Pacific Northwest. For state #12 of our “50 States Golf Journey” we found ourselves in Washington, breathing in that cool, crisp air and surrounded by golden leaves and misty hills. Our destination? The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane—a local gem that surprised us in all the best ways.
From the moment we touched down at Spokane International Airport, we knew this trip was going to be special. Spokane is one of those underrated towns that’s incredibly easy to navigate, welcoming, and close to some amazing outdoor experiences—including world-class golf. If you’re planning a couples golf getaway to the Pacific Northwest, put this town on your radar.
Autumn Golf Vibes: Crisp Air, Colorful Fairways, and Heated Carts
Our round at The Creek at Qualchan took place on a brisk fall morning, the kind where you can see your breath on the practice green and every swing feels just a little sharper in the chill. The course, nestled into the scenic rolling terrain of southern Spokane, winds through meadows, forests, and a natural creek bed. It’s a par-72 course that blends challenge and beauty in equal measure.
We were fortunate enough to get paired up with Jack, the course range who instantly felt like an old friend. Jack didn’t just greet us—he guided us. From insider tips on how the greens break to hidden hazards on a few sneaky doglegs, Jack was our unofficial course whisperer for the day.
But the real game-changer? Jack let us use his heated golf cart. Yes, you read that right—heated. As the wind picked up on a few of the more exposed holes, we were beyond grateful for the cozy ride between shots. It might sound like a small detail, but when you’re out on the course for four hours in chilly autumn temps, a warm seat is next-level luxury.
The Course Itself: Challenging Yet Playable
What stood out to us most about Qualchan—aside from the stunning views—was the perfect balance of challenge and playability. Wide fairways give you some breathing room off the tee, but you’ll still need to think your way around the course. Elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and water features on multiple holes kept us engaged the entire round.
The greens rolled true and were in fantastic shape for the season. And shoutout to the entire staff—everyone from the starter to the pro shop team was warm, helpful, and clearly passionate about creating a top-tier golf experience. Spokane city golf is doing it right.
Off the Course: Local Friends and Leather Goods
Of course, our trip to Spokane wasn’t just about golf. We had the chance to visit one of Mrs. Golf’s longtime friends who now lives in the area with her husband Josh Combs—and let us tell you, Josh is a total artist when it comes to handcrafted leather goods.
We got to stop by his workshop and see the process firsthand, and it was seriously inspiring. There’s something about watching someone pour heart and soul into their craft that makes you appreciate the finished product even more.
If you’re into high-quality, American-made leather wallets, belts, and accessories, do yourself a favor and check him out:
Spokane Splurge – Wooden City Spokane
After a crisp round at Qualchan Golf Course (thank you again, Jack & Steve! 🙌), we treated ourselves to a well-earned night out—and Wooden City Spokane delivered everything we could have hoped for and more. 💯
From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm, welcoming vibes and a stylish yet cozy atmosphere. The cocktails were creative and perfectly balanced (10/10 recommend the Draft Old Fashioned or specialty cocktails🍸), and the service made us feel right at home.
We shared a few appetizers to start—the Blistered Hungarian Peppers and French Onion Soup were standouts! For mains, the wood-fired pizza, house burger, and Spicy Lamb Rigatoni were out of this world. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully plated.
This was our splurge meal of the trip, and honestly? Totally worth it. Spokane, you know how to treat your guests right. If you’re ever in town and looking for a date-night spot or just want to elevate your food game—Wooden City Spokane is a must. 💫
Spokane: A Great Hub for Golf and Adventure
One of the things we love most about Spokane is how accessible it is. Whether you’re flying in from Phoenix like we did, or driving over from Seattle, it’s easy to get in and out of town. And once you’re here, everything is close—great food, cozy coffee shops, outdoor adventure, and even other golf destinations.
We highly recommend making the short drive over to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (CDA) while you’re here. It’s just about 40 minutes away and home to one of the most unique golf holes in the world—the famous floating green. (Go back to our state #11 Idaho post!)
Beyond the golf course, Spokane surprised us with its blend of outdoor charm, great food, and local creativity. We strolled through Riverfront Park and caught a breathtaking view of Spokane Falls, then wandered the serene paths at Manito Park—a fall must-visit. The local food scene didn’t disappoint either: we loved the cozy vibe and locally sourced dishes at Wild Sage Bistro, grabbed wood-fired pizza and craft beer at The Flying Goat, and sipped amazing coffee at Indaba. For a nightcap, Durkin’s Liquor Bar served up moody cocktails in a speakeasy-style setting.
Of course, no visit is complete without picking up your custom goods from J Combs & Co., where Josh’s handcrafted leather goods are truly next-level. If you have time, take a scenic drive to Green Bluff for cider and apple picking, or head over to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for lakeside views and more golf. Spokane is low-key awesome—and makes for a perfect couples golf getaway.
Final Thoughts: Washington Golf
